Nashua is the state's second-largest city, pressed against the Massachusetts line, and a lot of its houses were built in the same decades as the towns just south of the border. Post-war capes and ranches, 1970s and 1980s split-levels and colonials, and newer subdivision houses sit in the same ZIP codes as older neighborhoods nearer downtown. Forced air is common. So are oil tanks in garages and basements of houses that later grew a gas service. Additions over garages are a usual comfort complaint: the room was never on a real duct.
Liberty Utilities lists Nashua on its New Hampshire natural gas community list. Gas is widespread and still not universal. Propane shows up on streets the main never reached. Electric service for the city is typically Eversource. Check the bill. Heat pump rebates through NHSaves follow the electric utility's sponsorship, and the product still has to be on the program list. A city page cannot approve your rebate.
Cooling season is similar to northern Massachusetts: a few severe weeks, then a long stretch where an oversized air conditioner short-cycles and leaves the house clammy. Heating season is a full New Hampshire winter, colder than Boston's in a way people notice on the morning start. Outdoor units need a pad or a stand that is not under a roof that dumps ice. Condensers tucked against a deck get plugged with cottonwood and dryer lint. That is a cleaning problem until it becomes a repair.
The City of Nashua permits building work locally. Ask who pulls the mechanical or building permit for a change-out, and do not accept "Nashua doesn't care" without checking the city's inspection staff. State fuel-gas and plumbing licenses are looked up at OPLC, not at city hall. The steps are in how to vet a contractor.
Call (603) 420-0791 with one of the ZIP codes below. The contractor is independent and quotes the price after they see the equipment. Confirm insurance. This site is not a Nashua HVAC company.
A lot of Nashua split-levels have the air handler in a closet that became a storage room. Clear it before the visit. The return is often the closet door itself. If the door has been swapped for a solid door with no grille, the system has been starving for air for years. Mention that. It changes a repair quote into a small duct or grille quote, which is cheaper than a new system bought to solve a door.
