Dover is a seacoast mill city on the Cochecho, with brick mill buildings, older residential streets around them, and newer houses farther out. The mill-era housing was not designed for ducts. Radiators and baseboard are common. Later streets are a mix of capes and colonials with furnaces, some still on oil, some on gas. Converted mill space and downtown apartments add a third problem: equipment crammed into closets, condensers on roofs or pads with no service clearance, and condensate drains that have nowhere obvious to go.
Northern Utilities serves the seacoast and southeastern New Hampshire, which is the gas map that applies here more often than Liberty's Merrimack Valley list. Confirm the gas company and the electric company on the bills. Unitil's electric territory includes much of the seacoast. If a rebate is part of the proposal, the electric account has to be a sponsoring utility and the equipment has to qualify. See New Hampshire heat pump rebates.
Winters are seacoast winters: icy, windy, and long enough to expose a weak heat exchanger, but not the same design temperature as Berlin. Outdoor equipment still needs to sit above the snow that slides off a mill roof or a steep residential roof. Salt air reaches Dover on the right storm. Coils corrode. Electrical disconnects corrode. A tune-up that ignores the outdoor electrical compartment is incomplete on this side of the state.
The City of Dover has its own building officials. Ask the contractor which permit a boiler or furnace replacement needs in Dover, and ask what the inspector will want to see on a vent that leaves a mill building. We are not publishing an office address. State licenses for gas and plumbing are checked through OPLC, explained in how to vet a contractor.
Call (603) 420-0791 with the ZIP code below. The contractor is independent, quotes after a look at the equipment, and is responsible for the work. This site does not warrant it.
Mill buildings and dense older streets mean shared walls and shared mechanical rooms. If you are in a condo or a mill conversion, the equipment you think is yours may serve a common area, or your condenser may sit on a common roof. Know which before you call. A contractor cannot quote a replacement of a chiller or a common boiler as if it were a house furnace. Bring the association contact if the equipment is shared.
